You See, Marriage Is a Mitochondrion

From an ancient mechanism of responsibility to a future organ of trust

External → Internal From Responsibility to Trust High-Trust Organ
Marriage was not, from the beginning, a system of love. Within the asymmetry where the marks of pregnancy and childbirth fall on the woman's body alone, society asked, "Where shall we leave the responsibility that does not remain in the body?" Marriage was one of the answers. In agricultural society, marriage grew into a device for running lineage, property, and old age; in the modern era, contraception, education, divorce, and independence pulled its old functions outward one by one. Yet marriage does not vanish. Like mitochondria, it loses many functions and keeps a core — "Can I allow this person into the inside of my life?" Future marriage will not be a rite everyone must pass, but a high-trust relationship into which only those who have passed through trust may enter.

Mitochondria Were Originally Outsiders

Mitochondria were not always organs inside the cell — an outside being entered and became the cell's core energy organ. Marriage began the same way: as the process of bringing someone who could remain outside into the family.

What Remains in the Body, and What Is Made to Remain in the Institution

The marks of pregnancy and childbirth remain only on the woman's body. Society could not leave this asymmetry alone, so it sought to leave responsibility in an institution. Before being a name for romance, marriage was a way to make responsibility — which does not remain in the body — remain in society.

From a Device Against Departure to a Structure for Running the Family

As agricultural society emerged, marriage grew into a structure that fixed lineage, property, bloodline, old age, and inheritance. Just as mitochondria did not remain mere guests but took over energy production, marriage moved from a device against departure to the structure that runs the family.

Love Enters, and the Functions Leave

After the modern age, love entered marriage; around the same time, the functions marriage had carried — sex, childbirth, survival, old-age care — began to move outward one by one. Marriage seems to be emptying, but it is also a process of leaving only the core function — as mitochondria did.

Future Marriage Will Become Smaller and Heavier

Future marriage may decrease in number, but become more precise in meaning. It will no longer be a marriage made in order to live, but one chosen even when one can live without it. Not just anyone is brought into the inside of one's life — only those who pass through trust remain. Marriage becomes a high-trust relationship.

Marriage Is a Mitochondrion

A good marriage, like a mitochondrion that produces the cell's energy, becomes an organ that preserves life energy. A bad marriage, like a failed organ, shakes the whole of life. Just as mitochondria did, marriage will lose many things and keep its core — who is the person inside my life?
